Knowing the gross appearances of thyroid nodules is useful for the surgeon’s intraoperative diagnosis.
Here is my collection of gross appearances of papillary thyroid carcinomas.
Left lobe – cut section – papillary thyroid carcinoma – soft solid, no gross cystic areas, reddish with frond-like friable substances on cut section
Same as above (using flash for picture-taking)
Left lobe – cut section – papillary thyroid carcinoma – soft solid, no gross cystic areas, reddish with frond-like friable substances on cut section
Left lobe – solid, hard, dirty-white substance on cut section
In pyramidal lobe, right and left lobes – the one in the pyramidal lobe is hard solid, the ones in the right and left lobes are soft solid.
