Indurations on Scars of Operations for Breast Cancer

This patient has a history of an operation for breast cancer 23 years ago. A focal induration or thickening was noted on the scar (as shown in the picture) 2 years ago. A local recurrence of the breast cancer was a possibility for such kind of an situation. An excision (removal) of the induration eventually showed “hypertrophic scar,” a condition akin to “keloid.”

1) An unusual finding on the scar of patients who have undergone an operation for breast cancer is a red flag for a local recurrence. 2) However, not all indurations or “lumps” occurring on the scar are local recurrences. 3) A breast specialist should be consulted to assist in problem-solving and decision-making on diagnosis and treatment.
