Breast Cancer Survivor Myrna Dequiña – 23 Years in Remission
Ms. Myrna Dequiña was 42 years old when she underwent a modified radical mastectomy in 1989. The histopathology result showed invasive ductal carcinoma with one axillary node positive for metastasis. She underwent 6 cycles of chemotherapy (cyclophospamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil)[CMF]. There were no other additional treatments and no screening tests for recurrence thereafter. The surveillance was sign- and symptom-directed. She has been under my medical supervision since 1989.
I saw her today for check-up. She is now 65 years old, 23 years in remission. We both thank God for this long remission.
